WHITSON, DOUGLAS
|
||
Born 1884 in Dunedin, the youngest son of Thomas William Whitson. Contracted malaria when he was Chief(Marine) Engineer on the India run for the Union Steamship Company. His father refused him compensation. He had an endless stream of female admirers in his young days, and a walk along the main street with him was impeded by a constant succession of greetings, hat-raising and courtly bows to pretty women, but he didn't get caught by one until quite late in life! A strong swimmer , he saved two lives, one being Henry Peters of Brighton in 1924. He married Gwenyth Caroli Hotop in 1932. They had no children. Contributed by Ian Johnstone |
